After months of closure due to an electrical issue, the campground at the Whidbey Island Fairgrounds is set to reopen just in time for the start of the fair.

Port of South Whidbey Executive Director Angi Mozer said the port has been working with an electrician to have most of the power pedestals operational for the fair, which runs July 25-28. The system upgrade and replacement will happen after the event.

The campground closed to the public in October 2023 following an incident where a customer who was wearing gloves received a shock from one of the pedestals on the campground, which alerted port staff to the electrical issue.

The port used funds from a Rural County Economic Development Grant that was awarded in 2018 to fix the issue.

The campground boasts 30 sites with power and water connections for RVs and 20 tent campsites on a first come, first serve basis. Reservations are not being accepted at this time. There are also bathrooms with showers available for campers.

New foundation was recently installed for the fairgrounds food booths, which were impacted by burrowing rabbits. Port commissioners also approved new framing and walls to ensure the structure is safe to inhabit for years to come, Mozer said.
