SHEFFIELD – Susan Babson Young passed away comfortably of natural causes at her home in Sheffield, Ma on January 14, 2024.
She was born in Boston on June 22, 1939 to David L. and Katherine L. Babson. Susan was raised in Wellesley Hills, MA, and graduated from Vassar College in 1961. She spent 30 years as the library director at Berkshire School, and earned a master’s degree in Library Science from S.U.N.Y.
Susan, affectionately known as “Sweet Pea,” made lifelong friendships during her time as the librarian and advisor to many students at Berkshire School. She was a prolific needlepointer who won many awards, including one in which she met Princess Grace in Monaco. Susan was also involved for many years with the Sheffield Library and Mount Everett Regional School Board. In later years, she wintered on Whidbey Island in the Pacific Northwest.
Sweet Pea is survived by her husband of 63 years, Thomas H. Young, III; two sons,Thomas H. Young, IV and Nathaniel A. Young; five grandchildren, Sophie, Charles, Hattie, Lucille, and Thomas H. Young, V; a brother David L. Babson, Jr and a sister Katherine L. Babson, Jr; and a very special “son”Willie Brown.
SERVICE – A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Sheffield Center Cemetery, 71 Berkshire School Road, Sheffield, MA.
A Celebration of Life is planned for this summer.
