Arthur Donald Angst, age 79, entered into the presence of his Savior on March 4, 2024. He was born on May 5, 1944, in Seattle, Washington, to Edna (Thomson) and James Ulrich Angst, joining his older brother, Jim, to complete the family. After graduating from Roosevelt High School, Art enlisted in the U.S Marine Corps. Following his service, he became an Alameda County Sheriff’s Deputy, retiring as a captain. Art pursued a BA in Criminal Justice and an MA in Theology while working full-time for the sheriff’s department and raising his family.
Art spent his childhood in Seattle and cherished family vacations at Shore Meadows Resort on Whidbey Island, keeping the vacation-on-Whidbey tradition with his own family for years before he eventually retired to the island. Even in retirement, Art remained committed to a life of service, loyalty, and hard work. He actively participated in various groups, churches, clubs, and breakfast gatherings, often assuming leadership roles. He enjoyed engaging in debates and forming friendships with a diverse group of individuals. Art was known for his quick wit, scholarly teaching of the Bible, and unwavering dedication to his family. He fearlessly voiced his beliefs and stood firm in his values. Despite his accomplishments and education, Art shied away from the limelight, preferring to work quietly behind the scenes. Art worked with Dr. Tom Johnson to establish WITS (Whidbey Island Theological Studies) and served on the board of Pacific Association for Theological Studies in Seattle.
Throughout his life, Art approached challenges with the same courage he displayed as a Marine, police officer, son, and father, embodying the Semper Fi values he held dear. He loved and cared for his wife, Connie, who wholeheartedly supported him throughout their nearly 56-year marriage. Their unconditional love served as an inspiration to all who knew them. Art served as a role model to his sons, offering them love, encouragement, and unwavering support.
Art will be remembered as a hero, a rock, a teacher, and a devoted follower of Jesus. He is survived by his wife, Connie Thorpe Angst; his brother, Jim Angst; his sons, Jonathan and Daniel Angst; cousins Bruce and Stuart Thomson; his nieces, Susan and Michelle; and his great-nieces and nephews, Graham, Colin, Danielle, and Jon, along with their spouses and children, and many dear friends.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Mukilteo Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Samaritan’s Purse, Helping Hand of South Whidbey, or a charity of your choice.
