The South Whidbey School District is in the process of addressing the lack of running water in the high school locker rooms’ sinks.
Director of Operations Scott Peacock confirmed that the boys and girls locker rooms in the high school gymnasium have not had running water in the sinks and showers since last week; toilets and drinking fountains still work.
The issue originated from flood that occurred in August, which was caused by an old pipe that surrounded a 500-gallon water heater and that probably gave way to strong water pressure. During repairs, workers disconnected the water heater connected to the water line supplying hot and cold water to the locker rooms.
Currently, the district is replacing the water heater, which Peacock said could take a few weeks as the plumbing and electrical systems are replaced. The rooms had also been reconstructed due to mold damage.
In the meantime, students have been using hand sanitizers. The boys have been able to use the bathroom across the hall from the locker room. The hope is to fix the issue by Halloween.
“We are just trying our best,” Peacock said. “It’s been a very complex process getting everything fixed.”
