Those living on South Whidbey are all too familiar with the sad reality of a lack of quick food after a long day of work, school or other extracurricular activities.
A new take-and-bake pizza business in Freeland aims to alleviate some of this pressure for busy people and families on the go.
This week, Keasha Campbell opened her fourth food venture, Crab ‘N Go. As a high school softball coach and with three kids at home, Campbell understands the need for a place that stays open later and has convenient options.
“When I get done at 7 o’clock at night, there’s nowhere on South Whidbey to grab something to eat real quick,” she said. “We do a lot of Top Ramen and quesadillas.”
Customers can place orders online and pick up their raw pies at Crab ‘N Go, which is located in Suite 7 of the 18205 Highway 525 strip mall next to the Chevron Short Stop. The business does not have an oven, so all pizzas will need to be baked at home – much like the model of a popular fast-food pizza chain.
Not in the mood for a slice? Crab ‘N Go also offers a variety of salads.
Sweets lovers might especially enjoy a dessert pizza with a chocolate chip cookie base.
There are vegan, gluten-free and vegetarian options.
Pizza has had an interesting history in Freeland, including a former restaurant just steps away from Campbell’s location called Harold’s Gay 90’s Spaghetti and Pizza Parlor. Campbell remembers Gay 90’s for its cashew pizza, and she made a point of carrying cashews as one of her toppings at Crab ‘N Go.
“There’s stuff people love, there’s stuff people hate. We have six boxes of anchovies in the back just in case,” Campbell said with a laugh.
If tree nuts on pizza sound wild, try seafood. Smoked salmon and shrimp are both on the menu.
Langley resident Ali Shippey decided to order such a pie on Wednesday.
“Everything’s she touched has been gold,” Shippey said of Campbell, who also owns three Crabby Coffee shops – two in Freeland, one in Coupeville.
Crab, however, is not yet a topping.
For each Falcon Pizza – double mozzarella, double pepperoni and bacon bits – sold, $2 is donated to South Whidbey High School’s Athletic Booster Club.
A longtime South Whidbey resident who graduated from the high school herself, Campbell is a believer in uplifting other businesses and nonprofits.
With her coffee shops, young people have been able to earn high school credits and income. She hopes to do the same thing at Crab ‘N Go.
“I think it’s something that will be really positive for the community and it gives me the opportunity to employ a lot of high school kids,” she said.
Crab ‘N Go is open 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. For more information, visit crabngopizza.com or the Facebook page of the same name.
