The Coupeville School District has placed the principal and vice principal of the middle and high schools on non-disciplinary leave as an investigation is underway, according to a message sent out to families by Superintendent Shannon Leatherwood Monday morning.
Principal Geoff Kappes and Vice-Principal Allyson Cundiff will be temporarily replaced by Leatherwood for an unspecified period of time.
The message does not provide a reason for the investigation. The vagueness of the email led to rampant speculation on social media about the reasons for the action.
Several students had recently been suspended from the district.
When the News-Times reached out with questions, Leatherwood did not provide further details. Cundiff declined to comment, and the News-Times could not reach Kappes.
The school board’s agenda for Thursday includes an executive session to review the performance of a public employee. According to the meeting’s consent agenda, the board will also vote on renewing Kappes’ contract.
