To the editor:

As the school year draws to a close and I reflect on this year’s activities, I am once again impressed with how supportive a community we live in.

In coordinating the apprenticeship program at Langley Middle School, I ask business owners, agency directors, classroom teachers and others, over and over again if they will mentor students for an hour a day, nearly every day for a quarter, semester or school year. What I hear over and over again is “Yes!”

Through the knowledge, guidance and patience of these generous adults, students have had opportunities to learn about such things as small business operation, customer service, childcare and tutoring, animal health and horse training, culinary arts, cosmetology and technical theater skills.

In learning what goes on behind the scenes and in developing relationships with caring adults in the community, many have gained a new sense of confidence and appreciation. One student even said she made her decision to become a veterinarian after her experience at Useless Bay Animal Clinic.

I would like to express a big thank you to all who have opened their doors to these students.

They are: Clinton Auto, CMA Preschool, Critters & Co. Pet Center, Dr. Prael’s, DeMartini’s Bakery, Good Cheer Food Bank, HOPE Therapeutic Riding Program, Island Coffeehouse & Books, Island Angel Chocolates, Just B Hair Salon, Moonraker Bookshop, Pickles Deli, Prima Bistro, Ms. Roberts at the Primary School, Rumors Hair Salon, South Whidbey Animal Clinic, South Whidbey Children’s Center, Star Store Produce, Useless Bay Animal Clinic, Whidbey Coffee Lighthouse Cafe, and Whidbey Island Center for the Arts.

Thank you all for sharing your expertise with Langley Middle School students.
