Tennis and softball games rained out

Both the South Whidbey High School tennis match with Mount Vernon and fastpitch softball game at Sultan were cancelled due to rain on Monday. Neither event has been rescheduled as of Tuesday, April 8.

Parks district seeks

bids for repair work

The South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District has put out a call for bidders for a large scale drainage and irrigation project for the soccer sports fields on Langley Road.

Funding for the improvements came from the $1.6 million bond approved by voters in February.

In 2005, the district drained Field 1 and will now drain the other four to allow soccer to be played in all weather conditions.

The project is expected to be completed no later than mid-July.

Pelican sailors head back to sea

The South Whidbey Yacht Club will have its fall/winter championship race for its Pelican fleet beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12 at the Oak Harbor Marina.

The races will consist of an elimination championship series of five separate races.

The contests have a unique feature in that the contestants not only race their own boats but must switch off after each race to the boats of other contestants. By the finish, the winner will have demonstrated absolute mastery of this class of sailboat.

The representatives for South Whidbey Yacht Club are Bob Rogers and Derek Pritchard. Other Whidbey Island participants include Phil Litrenta and Marc DeJong.

Golfers wanted

for new program

South Whidbey Parks & Recreation is sponsoring a four-session golf program for those who want to become better golfers. It will be led by golf experts Malcolm Ferrier and Bob Brown.

The lessons for adults and youth age 10 and up begin at

9 a.m. Saturdays, April 26 through May 17 at Island Greens Golf Course.

The course is on French Road in Clinton.

The program is for those wanting to tidy up their skills and those returning to the game. The $40 fee includes three sessions on the power swing and on the short game, plus a make-up session as needed.

Houdini’s hosts nine-ball tourney

A new regional nine-ball tournament is coming to Freeland later this month.

Houdini’s Billiards will host the “Freeland Strokers Special” on Sunday, April 27. The contest is a race-to-five double elimination tournament with the final match being a race-to-seven.

The entry fee is $30 with the first 32 paid players guaranteed a place at the table. Houdini’s is adding $150 after 32 players sign up.

Pitch, hit and run contest is coming

The South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District and South Whidbey Little League are sponsoring a free pitch, hit and run competition April 19 for kids age 7 to 14.

The free program helps build basic baseball skills. It will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 19 at the Community Park.

Competitors will have the chance to advance through four levels of competition, including the national finals at the 2008 baseball All-Star Game. The champions in each age group will be awarded and advance to the sectional level.

All participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate and fill out a registration/waiver form prior to the start of the competition.

Parks district will

offer tennis lessons

The South Whidbey parks district is offering spring tennis sessions for beginners and intermediate players in grades six through eight.

There are two separate classes to be held at the high school courts, one for beginners and the other for intermediate and advanced players. The cost per student for both classes is $48.

Spring tennis will begin at

2:35 p.m. on Monday, May 5.

Advanced players tennis will run for three weeks starting at 3:50 p.m. Monday, May 5.

The course is designed for players who have a fair understanding of the forehand, backhand, volley and serve and who can sustain a rally of several shots. The emphasis will be on improving strokes, learning advanced shots and strategy for match play.
