The Washington State Patrol is adding extra patrols through the Labor Day weekend, the State Patrol announced this week.

“Troopers will be focusing on dangerous driving behaviors known to cause injury and fatality collisions,” said Washington State Patrol Capt. Ken Ginnard.

“Drivers must make a plan before the festivities begin — if you are going to drink, ensure you have a designated driver,” Ginnard added. “Do not take the risk of ruining your life and the lives of others.”

Overtime grant funding will pay for the extra patrols, planned for Island, Snohomish, Skagit and Whatcom counties. Officers will be looking for violations that contribute to traffic collisions including speeding, DUI and aggressive driving. State troopers will also be enforcing the state’s seat-belt law.

The State Patrol will also be using aircraft to crack down on aggressive and impaired drivers during day and nighttime hours.

State Patrol officials said the public is encouraged to call 911 with a license plate number and a vehicle description if they spot aggressive, impaired or unsafe drivers.
