An 11-year-old Seattle boy and his mother were rescued after becoming stranded about 200 feet up a cliff at Double Bluff Beach on Thursday afternoon.

“They climbed up the steep slope with their hands and feet, but coming down became difficult,” said Deputy Chief Jon Beck of Island County Fire District 3.

Neither mother nor son were injured in the incident, which happened about 5 p.m., Beck said.

He said four members of the district’s seven-member rope rescue team climbed the cliff and used their ropes to rappel the pair to safety. Both mother and son remained calm during the rescue, Beck said.

The pair, who said they came to the island for the day to enjoy the beach, called 911 on a cell phone when they became stuck on the first bluff south of the beach entrance, Beck said.
