South Whidbey churches list weekend events

Plenty of activities from which to choose.

‘Mother Teresa’ film at Trinity Lutheran

The first half of the powerful and inspirational movie “Mother Teresa” will be shown at the next adult forum at Trinity Lutheran Church in Freeland.

The movie follows Mother Teresa through 10 countries on four continents and through the war-torn streets of Beirut and Guatemala under siege. The story shows what one person can do to make a difference sharing Christ’s love for those “least among us.”

The class will be in the Fireside Room at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Pastor Eric Ottumwa will lead the discussion as a beginning preparation for Holy Week.

Rev. Gabriel to give the Unity message

Rev. Joanna Gabriel will speak about “Fine Lines” at the Unity of Whidbey service on Sunday.

Maintaining a positive outlook and stream-of-consciousness can be challenging in these noisy and chaotic times. Do I plug my ears and chant, or do I ignore what’s going on out there? How can I stay conscious and feel like I am also being a responsible human at the same time?

Gabriel will be joined by musician Tadd CharettteNunn and platform assistant Joy Williams for this exploration at the 10 a.m. service.

A Course in Miracles group meets from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

All are welcome. Visit Unity of Whidbey at http://www.unityofwhidbeyisland.org for more information.

Art and Spirituality’ at UUCWI on Sunday

Spirituality and art are like the chicken and the egg — neither can exist without the other and it’s impossible to know which came first.

At the Sunday service for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island, three members of UUCWI will briefly consider how art informs their worship and vice versa. Carlos Xavier will be the special guest musician.

All are welcome. Values-based children’s religious-exploration classes and childcare will be provided.

The service is at 10 a.m. at 20103 Highway 525, just north of Freeland. Check www.whidbey.com/uucwi for more information.

Pastor preaches about God’s way

We all have things that stand in our way; God’s solution can be decisive. Tomorrow’s sermon at South Whidbey Community Church will be from the Old Testament’s Book of Joshua, Chapter 6. Pastor Darrell Wenzek will preach on the topic, “God’s Way of Removing Barricades.”

Sunday worship at SWCC is from 10 to 11 a.m. and is preceded by an adult learning forum at 9 a.m. with Stan Walker leading a study in the Book of First Corinthians, and Rick Zapata leading a study in the Book of Genesis: the life of Abraham.

These are open classes, and everyone is invited.

Home Bible studies are also offered; check the church website for times and locations.

The monthly men’s breakfast is at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 9 at the Grange. All guys are invited for food and fellowship.

All SWCC sermons and special adult-forum events are recorded,  and are available on the website.

The church is a local independent, non-denominational church that welcomes everyone and gathers for worship at the historic Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road.

Understanding the source of ‘good’

Many people are searching for security, peace and health in this world, where many of our human inventions and structures appear to be failing.

How to lose fear and perceive the abundance we all share is the topic of the Christian Science service on Sunday, April 3.

“The understanding, even in a degree, of the divine All–power destroys fear, and plants the feet in the true path — the path which leads to the house built without hands ‘eternal in the heavens,’” (“Science and Health”).

Understanding your source of good — not just positive thinking — comes through knowledge of God and how the teachings of Jesus Christ can be applied to your life today.

“Fear not little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom,” (Luke 12:32).

All are welcome to this opportunity to explore the reality of good. Services begin at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at 15910 Highway 525, just north of Bayview and across from Useless Bay Road.
