A new visitor to Langley this weekend is affectionately called “Fiber Goddess,” and her sole job is to draw attention to the Whidbey Island Surface Design show taking place both days at WICA’s Zech Hall.

After the lovely goddess beckons visitors inside the hall, they will find the works of 17 artists in a wide variety of mediums and subject matter. Some is wall art, some is wearable art, some is home decor and some is jewelry, to mention a few.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday.

“We wanted something to attract people to the site,” said Fine Gelfand, a textile artist who took it upon herself to create Fiber Goddess out of nothing but fencing material surrounded by chicken wire stuffed fabric. “At least 2,000 pieces of fabric strips I tied to the chicken wire.”

Still, the Fabric Goddess was missing something, so Gelfand turned to here husband, Jerry, an electronics wizard, who added strobe light eyes.

Perfect.

Gelfand was pleased with her creation, even though “the time involved was somewhat more than I expected.”

The Fabric Goddess stands nearly 7-feet tall. “She’s a little round, voluptuous,” Gelfand said. “We’re looking for a suitable mate for some excitement.”

The goddess should draw plenty of attention to she show, which pleases its creator. “Everything is one of a kind,” she said. Including the welcoming goddess.
