A former manager at the Freeland branch of Whidbey Island Bank who embezzled from a cash drawer was sentenced to prison Friday.
Shawna Brown pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of bank embezzlement for stealing $162,000 over a three-year period.
A judge in U.S. District Court in Seattle sentenced Brown to a year and one day in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The extra day allows her to qualify for “good time,” which could cut 15 percent off her sentence.
The sentence is less than the 15 months recommended by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Brown was a customer service manager who supervised tellers at the branch. The U.S. Attorney’s sentencing memorandum describes the “lengthy scheme“ in which Brown thwarted the bank’s internal controls and created fake documents on a daily basis to avoid detection.
Brown stole cash from her cash drawer from 2010 until she was caught in August of 2013.
The theft was discovered in August of 2013 when an injury forced Brown to miss work and other employees uncovered the scheme. She admitted to the crime in interviews with the FBI and the FDIC.
