Clinton is getting the word out that it’s not just a bump in the road to Freeland or Langley.

A new four-color brochure, “Discover Clinton: Gateway to Whidbey Island,” has been created by the Clinton Chamber of Commerce.

“There’s always been an issue about Clinton having a strong identity,” Nancy Rowan, a chamber staff member, said Monday. “We’re working hard to make Clinton more than a place people drive through.”

The brochure features a colorful map of Clinton and South Whidbey detailing locations and contact information for local businesses, churches, recreation opportunities, community facilities, lodgings and more.

The double-fold document includes a brief history of the area, short descriptions of activities available and color photographs by Clinton photographer and cardiologist David Welton.

“This is a real milestone,” Rowan said. “The chamber is really trying to give people information to convince them to spend some time and see what Clinton has to offer.”

The brochure is now on display and available on the Washington State Ferries, alongside information about Freeland, Langley and Oak Harbor.

“That exposure for Clinton is excellent,” Rowan said. “Millions of people ride the ferries.”

Rowan praised the efforts of the chamber board and its chairwoman, Sherryl Christie-Bierschenk, for their aggressive efforts to promote their community.

“Clinton hasn’t had the business core that Freeland or Langley have,” she said. “The new leadership in the chamber is working hard to develop an identity for Clinton of its own.”

“What’s there besides the highway?” Rowan said. “The chamber is making that a priority.”
