State ferry rate hike kicks in May 1

Washington State Ferries’ peak season begins Wednesday, May 1, with an additional 25 percent surcharge.

Washington State Ferries’ peak season begins Wednesday, May 1, with an additional 25 percent surcharge applied to full fare vehicle/driver tickets. It’s even higher, 35 percent, on the Anacortes to San Juan Islands routes.

Peak season rates are unchanged from 2012, according to a State Ferries news release. The surcharge does not affect passenger fares or frequent user multi-ride fares.

The seasonal surcharge helps pay for increased operational costs that come with increased traffic May through September.

For a driver of a standard sized vehicle, the cost on the Clinton to Mukilteo route will rise from $6.35 to $7.75. A 20-ride commuter card will still cost $126.60 for an average-size sedan, which works out to $6.33 per crossing.

On the Coupeville to Port Townsend route, cost for a car and driver will rise from $8.20 to $10.25. The 20-ride commuter card will remain $164.20 or $8.21 per crossing.
