More than 50 Sandy Point homes will continue, as they have for decades, to get water service from Langley.

The Langley City Council approved a five-year contract with the Sandy Point Owners Association to provide water service. A water main runs along Sandy Point Road, where it connects to homes in the Sandy Point neighborhood east of city limits. Public Works Director Stan Berryman said a deal has been in place, with a five-year sunset, for at least two decades. Nothing in the deal has changed from the previous contract.

“Everything’s the same,” Berryman said.

Added Mayor Fred McCarthy: “That’s a standard agreement being renewed this year with an increase of 2 percent.”

About 980 units are served by the city’s water supply, with 56 coming from the Sandy Point association.

Getting the service outside of the city limits comes at a price. On top of the monthly regular residential rate of $41.25 for 3,500 gallons, Sandy Point homeowners pay 22 percent — $50.65 per month. Next year, that will increase to $51.66 for those outside of the city limits.

Many years before the 22 percent surcharge was implemented, Sandy Point owners paid a 50 percent surcharge.

“They went through a process and determined it was a little high,” McCarthy said.

The contract is subject to the fee schedule rate set by the city. Utilities rates are expected to increase 2 percent for sewer, storm water and water, with a possible higher rate increase proposed for sewer service.
