The five members of Girl Scout Daisy Troop 42161 of Langley collected 70 coats to distribute to homeless people in Seattle.

The coats, all laundered and folded, were collected at drop-off points throughout South Whidbey as part the nationwide One Warm Coat Program.

The coats were turned over to St. Vincent de Paul in Seattle.

“We are thrilled to be thought of for these coats,” said Daria Roche, of St. Vincent de Paul, who came to Langley recently to meet the Scouts, explain the program and collect the garments.

“The need is great this year,” she added.

The Daisy Scouts, all 6- or 7-year-old first-graders, are Kristen Riley, Alison Nikula, Kayla Johnson, Krisann Turnbull-Agnew and Rachel Harder.

Coordinating the project for the girls were Donna Riley and Christina Agnew.

One Warm Coat began in 1992 as a Thanksgiving weekend coat drive in San Francisco. Since then, more than 1 million coats have been donated in thousands of local communities across North America.

The Langley Scouts wrapped large grocery boxes and placed them throughout South Whidbey asking people to donate “new or gently used coats.”

“It’s amazing to see what little 6- and 7-year-olds (and their parents) can do to make a difference,” Riley said.
