Mayor Paul Samuelson appointed 11 people to Langley’s various advisory boards during last week’s city council meeting.

Samuelson picked Paul Sarkis to serve on Langley’s Design Review Board along with Ron Kasprisin as an alternate.

Jim Sundberg was appointed to the Planning Advisory Board and Craig Moore, who ran unsuccessfully for a city council seat last year, was named the alternate for the board.

Councilman Bob Waterman will lead the city’s new Historic Preservation Commission.

Also on the commission are Fran Abel, Linda Beeman, Martin Fernandez, Jerry Finrow, Harrison Goodall and Herbert Helsel.

Samuelson also suggested changes to Langley’s code to simplify board appointments and clarify issues such as the length of appointed terms.

The administration wants to standardize the term length to three years. Samuelson also wants the mayor to appoint and the city council to confirm appointments, a format that would also be followed for removing someone from a city board or commission.

The city also wants to clear up how often each board or commission will meet.

Samuelson also made recommendations for specific volunteer groups.

For the Board of Appeals, the city wants to write specific rules to tailor the board’s actions with what’s needed by the city.

Samuelson also wants to “sunset” the Harbor Advisory Board by January 2009 when the Port of South Whidbey takes over ownership of the city marina.

The Parks and Recreation Board may also be renamed, and rules covering the Civil Service Commission may also be updated.

Finally, Samuelson suggested allowing people who live within the city’s urban growth area to serve on Langley’s Design Review Board.
