Good Cheer is looking for children and adult writers for its essay contest with the theme “Creating a Hunger-Free Community.”

Writers can also pick a topic related to hunger or food insecurity as part of the local food bank’s month-long hunger awareness activities.

Winning entries will receive Good Cheer Thrift Store certificates ranging from $5 to $50. One grand- prize-winning essay will receive a $100 gift card good at Payless Food Store.

Contest categories are: grades one to five; grades six to eight; grades nine to 12; and adult.

Typed or printed essays no longer than two pages can be e-mailed to kathy@goodcheer.org with the header “Essay Contest,” dropped off at either Good Cheer Thrift Store in Langley or Clinton or at the food bank, or mailed to Good Cheer Essay Contest, PO Box 144, Langley, WA 98260.

Essays must be received by Sept. 20 and need to include the entrant’s name, grade or age, plus a phone number and a mailing address.

Winning entries will be announced on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Clinton’s Good Cheer Thrift Store’s Hunger Awareness event. The winning entry will also be printed in Good Cheer’s December newsletter.
