South Whidbey churches plan weekend services

Plenty of events are on tap.

Series starts Sunday at Trinity Lutheran

A four-part series on comparative religions will start at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 6 in the Fireside Room at Trinity Lutheran Church.

The first speaker in the series will be Mark Eager, a husband and father of four children. He is a history teacher at South Whidbey High School and a community volunteer. Through life experiences, Eager will explore what it means to be a Christian fundamentalist, the historical context where fundamentalism arose, and the continuing tensions between liberal and conservative Christianity.

Sunday’s talk is on ‘Biblical Application’

Sunday’s’s sermon at South Whidbey Community Church will discuss “Biblical Application.”

Sunday worship is from 10 to 11 a.m. and is preceded by an adult learning forum at 9 a.m., with Stan Walker leading a study in the book of First Corinthians, and Rick Zapata leading a study in the book of Genesis: the life of Abraham. These are open classes, and everyone is invited. Home Bible studies are also offered; check the church website for times and locations.

SWCC is a local independent, non-denominational church that gathers for worship at the Deer Lagoon Grange. For more information, call 221-1220 or visit www.whidbey church.org.

Finding the sacred in the mundane

Though we speak of the devil in the details, it is also true that the particulars of daily life invite us to “hold infinity in the palm of our hand, and eternity in an hour.” By what alchemy does the mundane manifest the sacred, and can we bottle it?

At the Sunday service for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island, guest speaker Dianne Shiner will reflect on the power of the ordinary to shape and transform by using poetry from some of her favorite writers.

Shiner has degrees in theology and social work, and has served as executive director of the Whidbey Institute, Holden Village, Lutheran Social Services and Divorce Lifeline.

All are welcome. Values-based children’s religious exploration classes and childcare will be provided. The service is at 10 a.m. at 20103 Highway 525. Check www.whidbey.com/uucwi for more info.

St. Hubert Catholic Church will host women’s retreat

A Women’s Retreat for South Enders will be at St. Hubert Catholic Church on Saturday.

The retreat starts at 10 a.m. and will be led by Dr. Marianne Dorman. The theme is “Pondering the Word of God by following Mary’s example.”

Attendees should bring a sack lunch and a Bible. RSVP by calling 222-3566.

Benecke to speak at Unity of Whidbey service

Doug Benecke will give the lesson “Lift Every Voice” on Sunday, Feb. 6, at the Unity of Whidbey service.

It takes many voices to make a resonant chorus, and many talents to make a community, and each individual is filled also with a multitude of gifts. Only when every voice is lifted do we benefit from the fullness that Spirit gives both to the self and to the group.

The harmonizing of our differences, as well as the creative tensions between our disparate parts, both within our community and ourselves, are the topics of this week’s talk by songwriter Benecke, with musical collaborator Talia Toni Marcus. Donna Vanderheiden will be the platform assistant for the service.

“Issues and Answers,” a discussion time with the Unity board members, is at 11:45 a.m. A Course in Miracles group meets 3:30 to 5 p.m.

The service is at 10 a.m. and all are welcome. Unity of Whidbey’s chapel is located at 5671 Crawford Road in Langley.

Visit Unity of Whidbey’s website at http://www.unityofwhidbeyisland.org for more information.

Christian Science service will focuses on ‘Spirit’

On Sunday, Feb. 6, the Christian Science service will be on “Spirit” in order to focus on what spirit is and how we are guided, protected, and share in that one Spirit.

“He fills all space, and it is impossible to conceive of such omnipresence and individuality except as infinite Spirit or Mind. Hence all is Spirit and spiritual,” (“Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures”).

With readings from the Bible and “Science and Health,” the service will explore the harmonious and complete connection between our spiritual selves and our spiritual parent. Everyone is welcome.

Services begin at 10:30 a.m. at 15910 Highway 525 (across from Useless Bay Road).
