Students will interview Wednesday with the South Whidbey School Board for a position as a student director on the board.

The board will meet for a special session March 22 specifically to interview, review and appoint a student candidate to their ranks. Interviews begin at 4:15 p.m., with an executive session scheduled for 6 to 6:30 p.m. A public vote will follow at the end of the executive session.

Adding a student voice to their ranks was proposed earlier in the year and followed with a district policy for students to join the board. Student representatives on the board do not have voting power, however.

The student must be entering grades 11 or 12 the following school year, maintain “good” academic standing, attend all workshops and board meetings as required, obey rules and regulations pertaining to board members and act as a liaison for the board to students. Serving on the board is worth 0.5 elective credits for each semester served and/or U.S. history “Honors” designation on their academic file.
