Pastor Wenzek speaks on Sardis
Pastor Darrell Wenzek speaks Sunday at South Whidbey Community Church on the topic “Sardis: the Unresponsive Church,” based on Revelation 3:1-6.

‘Inner Holydays’ at Unity of Whidbey
Rev. Christina Lee will discuss “Inner Holydays” at Unity of Whidbey on Sunday.
Advent is beginning, and Lee will help explore the metaphysical journey to Bethlehem. The service will look at the inner meaning of this time of preparation for the birth of Christ consciousness within us.
Music will be provided by Tadd CharetteNunn, and the platform assistant will be Karen McInerney. After the service, a Heart Circle will meet from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and then “A Course in Miracles” group will meet from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Communion of Thanksgiving at UUCWI
Loosely based on the Eucharist, the Sunday service at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island will include readings from various wisdom traditions that explore themes of gratitude for the gift of life, the bounty of the earth and renewed commitment to a world of peace, justice and love.
The service is at 10 a.m., and all are welcome. Values-based children’s religious exploration classes and childcare will be provided.

Forum looks at start of normative theology
The next adult forum at St. Augustine’s in-the-Woods Episcopal Church will be “The Beginnings of Normative Theology.”
In this lecture, the forum will consider the development of normative theology among the proto-orthodox, who insisted that believing the “right” things was essential for salvation, and who took care, therefore, to formulate correct doctrine and differentiate it from false doctrine.
One of the interesting features of orthodox theology is its paradoxical affirmations, e.g. Jesus is human and divine at the same time. Forum attendees will see that these paradoxes emerged as proto-orthodox writers developed their views in opposition to the views of others who denied either Jesus’ humanity or his divinity.
The forum starts at 9:15 a.m. Sunday; Ted Brookes will present.
Holiday offerings at Langley UMC
Langley United Methodist Church on South Whidbey has holiday offerings for many tastes and ages, and invites the community to come participate.
The church’s Advent services begin Sunday, Nov. 28. All are welcome to come at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday for an inspirational thought to go with each Advent candle.
At the 9:30 a.m. service on Dec. 12, the Langley UMC Sunday School children and youth will present an original Christmas play, with a Christmas story reinterpreted by youthful voices for present times on Whidbey Island.
There will be two Christmas Eve candlelight services, at 4:30 and 10 p.m., on Friday, Dec. 24. The earlier time is for families, with a tableau of the scene at the manger. The evening service includes Communion. A freewill offering for Good Cheer will be taken at both.
Choir performs at Langley Methodist
The community is invited to enjoy music of the season from the Chancel Choir and guest artists at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5 at Langley United Methodist Church.
The holiday concert, under the direction of Betsy Arand, will include the children’s choir, flute and harp selections, organist Kathy Fox and a brass quartet.

Learn to protect yourself from fear
The Christian Science service on Sunday, Nov. 28 will explore ways in which you can protect yourself from fear of evil.
“At all times and under all circumstances, overcome evil with good. Know thyself, and God will supply the wisdom and the occasion for a victory over evil. Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you,” (“Science and Health”).
The service begins at 10:30 a.m. at 15910 Highway 525 (just north of Bayview and across from Useless Bay Road).

Let Langley United Methodist Church do the baking for your holiday cookies this year.
The church’s annual cookie walk is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4 in Fellowship Hall.
Shoppers can fill a box with their choice of homemade goodies for just $10 (ingredient lists will be posted and there are some non-wheat selections).
Proceeds benefit local charities supported by the United Methodist Women.
