Ferries floats wait prediction program

Ferry commuters to Whidbey Island can now check the wait at the Clinton, Mukilteo, Port Townsend and Coupeville ferry terminals online.

Ferry commuters to Whidbey Island can now check the wait at the Clinton, Mukilteo, Port Townsend and Coupeville ferry terminals online.

Washington State Ferries is piloting a terminal conditions page that estimates the number of available car spaces on upcoming sailings.

“This is just one more tool for our customers,” said David Moseley, assistant secretary of Washington State Department of Transportation, Ferries Division, in a recent news release.

“Seeing the number of available vehicle spaces in real-time for an upcoming sailing helps our customers make an informed decision about their travel plans.”

The page, www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/vesselwatch/Terminals.aspx, is a portal to every ferry terminal in the Washington ferry system. Clicking on one of the locations shows traffic cameras, the number of spaces on three upcoming sailings and ferry alerts.

Agency officials hope the new page will help ferry travelers catch their planned sailing, reduce vehicle congestion, encourage travel during non-peak times and promote vehicle reservations, which are not offered on the Clinton-to-Mukilteo route.

Vehicle space is calculated by taking the ferry’s capacity and subtracting the number of vehicle fares collected at the tollbooth and reservations.
