Orca Network’s phone has been quiet the past week.

That’s because people aren’t seeing many orcas around Whidbey. The last sighting of any resident orcas was July 20.

“It’s unheard of for the residents to be away from the inland waters for so many days in June and July,” said Howard Garrett and Susan Berta, the Orca Network’s founders and directors.

Biggs/transient orcas were rarely spotted in the past couple of weeks, according to the Orca Network.

Garrett and Berta claimed orcas are out in the Pacific Ocean near the continental shelf when they would normally be in Puget Sound because Chinook salmon, orcas’ primary diet, are dwindling from California to British Colombia.

Some were spotted recently near Vancouver Island and the San Juan Islands.
