LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Sen. Haugen supports transit

To the editor:

There is a movement in Island County to unseat Mary Margaret Haugen in favor of a candidate who is willing to restructure Island Transit. Part of this restructuring process would include charging riders a fee to use a transit system that has always been free.

If you have ever taken the opportunity to be an Island Transit passenger you may have observed the diversity of riders traveling with you. For a significant segment of Island County residents, Island Transit is their only form of transportation. This free bus service provides transportation to Whidbey General Hospital, senior centers, schools, shopping and other essential destinations between the Clinton ferry dock, Mount Vernon and Camano Island. Wheelchair access is available on every bus.

For many riders, any fare foisted on them by this restructuring scheme would impose a monthly expense that could put them in a financial bind and restrict their community access with the possibility of leaving them stranded at home.

Island Transit is a uniquely free commuter system. Vote for Mary Margaret Haugen to insure that our transportation service will remain free and accessible to everyone.
