Whidbey’s Topsoils of Freeland is the low bidder on a county contract to grind and haul woody debris picked up by county crews after storms and yard waste that’s dropped off at the solid waste complex in Coupeville.

The Island County Public Works Department recommends that county commissioners award the bid; commissioners are expected to talk about the bid opening at their work session this week.

Whidbey’s Topsoils bid the job at $28.60 per town for hauled ground material, and $22.50 for ground material left on the site.

Four companies submitted bids, which were opened Feb. 1.

Lenz Enterprises of Stanwood submitted a bid that totaled $48,401 a year; Barker’s Wood Chipping (Bellingham), $40,180; Black Family Enterprises (Friday Harbor) $37,181; and Whidbey’s Topsoil, $30,444.

Commissioners will get a summary of the bids at their meeting at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15. Officials will also discuss a three-year contract extension with Rabanco for solid waste hauling and disposal.
