Nativity Pageant comes alive with song
At the Sunday service for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island, the children — and many of the adults in the congregation — will present an intergenerational Nativity Pageant with original songs by Joyce Poley.
This is a lovely, gentle program with a contemporary message. All are welcome. Childcare will be provided for infants and toddlers; other children are invited to watch the pageant (there will be no religious education classes).

‘Comfort and Joy’ presented at LCMA
Celebrate the arts this Christmas at Langley CMA church. Family and friends of LCMA invite the South Whidbey community to an opportunity to enjoy vocals, instrumentals, drama and interpretive dance in its production of “Comfort and Joy.”
“Comfort and Joy” follows a family as it uses memories, both current and past, to harken back to what is really important to celebrate during the holidays. The pageant is based on the quote, “I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow,” from Jeremiah 31:13.
The program is free and will be presented twice at the church, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 19.

St. Hubert’s presents Festival of Lessons
The choir of St. Hubert Catholic Church in Langley will present a Festival of Lessons and Carols for Advent at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19.
This meditative service of readings, hymns and anthems provides a time of reflection and renewal for all during a busy time.
Lessons and Carols, as it is informally called, is patterned after the Christmas Eve observance at King’s College in Cambridge, England. It has become an annual holiday tradition for thousands of families in the Puget Sound region.
The program is free to the public; however an item of non-perishable food for the local food bank will be gladly accepted at the door. A reception will follow in the parish hall.

Holiday offerings for all at Langley UMC
Langley United Methodist Church on South Whidbey has holiday offerings for many tastes and ages, and invites the community to participate.
The church’s Advent services are at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday.
At the 9:30 a.m. service on Dec. 12, the Langley UMC Sunday School children and youth will present an original Christmas play, with a story re-interpreted by youthful voices for present times on Whidbey Island.
There will be two Christmas Eve candlelight services, at 4:30 and 10 p.m., on Friday, Dec. 24.
The earlier time is especially for families, with a tableau of the scene at the manger. The evening service includes Communion.
A freewill offering for Good Cheer will be taken at both services.
Series looks at Christmas carols
South Whidbey Community Church presents a series of Christmas sermons that teach about the “theology of Christmas carols.” Sunday morning, Pastor Ron Wedeking will speak about the carol “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” based on Luke 2:8-14.
There is also a men’s breakfast at the grange today at 8:30 a.m., where Stan Walker will show aerial film footage he took over Vietnam from a plane off the carrier U.S.S. Constellation. Steve Hochenedel is the featured chef. Guests and visitors welcomed.
Sunday worship at SWCC is from 10 to 11 a.m. and is preceded by adult learning forums at 9 a.m. with Walker leading a study in the book of Ephesians. This is an open class, and everyone is invited.
SWCC gathers for worship each Sunday at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road.

Giving thanks for God’s protection
The holidays usually involve traveling for families, and at the Sunday service for the Christian Science Society, the message will focus on being especially grateful at this time that the Creator protects everyone under all circumstances. “All of God’s creatures, moving in the harmony of Science, are harmless, useful, indestructible,” (“Science and Health”).
Come and give thanks for God’s divine protection throughout the year, including the holiday season. “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever,” (Psalm 23).
This joyful service begins at 10:30 a.m. at 15910 Highway 525 (just north of Bayview and across from Useless Bay Road). Everyone is welcome.
Rev. Becker gives the Unity message
