A huge scene was made Friday night around Baby Island when the U.S. Coast Guard, Camano Island Fire & Rescue, Central Whidbey Fire & Rescue and South Whidbey Fire/EMS searched the water, to no avail.

Deputy Chief Mike Cotton of South Whidbey Fire/EMS said a caller from Baby Island reported hearing a cry for help coming from the water about 9:30 p.m. Several agencies scoured the area, including Saratoga Passage and Holmes Harbor, but never found anyone.

The search lasted until 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2.

“We searched the waters of Holmes Harbor and Saratoga Passage until 3:30 in the morning and there was nothing,” he said.

“A lot of effort was spent out there,” he added.

Two other marine rescue calls were made. One was reported Sunday, but a bystander was able to tow the stricken boat to the Freeland Park boat dock by the time emergency responders arrived. The other, Cotton said, was someone who was worried that a boater had not returned home. That boater was on their way home and was OK, Cotton said.
