The South Whidbey boys golf team placed second behind Bellingham at the District 1 tournament last week.
Out of a field of 15 teams, Bellingham led with 389 points, South Whidbey had 410 and Mount Baker was third with 422. All Falcon golfers made the first-round cut and qualified for the final round. Only two teams in the field accomplished this feat.
South Whidbey’s Shane Thompson shot 79/82 over the two-day event at Skagit Golf Course, and teammate Harrison Price shot 80/83. Both Falcon golfers qualified for state finals at Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima on May 24-26.
Connor Mock shot 168 (narrowly missing the cut after a courageous three-hole playoff round), and Jesse Portillo and Ben Saari tied at 172. Josh Yingling shot an 88 the first day but scratched on the second.
“Shane, Harrison, Connor, Jesse and Ben should be commended for their poise and determination,” said Falcon coach Steve Jones. “They positively represented their parents, school and community.
“I can be nothing but optimistic to see what the future holds for this group, since they are all coming back next season,” Jones added. “This group has very good chemistry, and the intrinsic motivation to work hard on their skills in the off-season to reach the next level.”
