Eleven of South Whidbey’s most talented young musicians performed with the Everett Youth Symphony Orchestras in a spring concert May 24 at Northshore Christian Academy in Everett.
Among many program highlights, Clinton violinist and EYSO concerto competition winner Tera Applegate performed a solo of “Vivaldi’s “Summer” Concerto No. 2 in G minor, from the composer’s “Four Seasons.”
She then joined the youth orchestra in the final performances of the evening: Gordeli’s “Concertino for Flute and Orchestra,” Borodine’s “Polovtsian Dances” and Verdi’s “La Forza del Destino.”
Everett Youth Symphony Orchestras (EYSO) has four different student orchestras at different levels including prelude, intermezzo, junior and youth. The EYSO Concerto Competition is an annual contest open to members of the youth orchestra, and winners are selected to perform the following year with either the youth or junior orchestras.
Tera, 13, was a winner of this competition two years in a row — in 2010 and also in 2011.
Since she was the first-place winner this year, Tera will have the opportunity to solo with the youth orchestra next year, when she might play the “Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor,” with the final choice of next year’s programming being determined by the EYSO music director, who may choose a different piece for Tera to play.
Tera had her solo debut at 10, playing Vivaldi’s “Concerto in A minor” with the Saratoga Chamber Orchestra after winning the Saratoga Young Artists Concerto Competition in 2008. She won the same competition again in 2010 and performed a solo of Mozart’s “Concerto in G Major.” She placed or received honorable mention in the Port Gardener Bay Concerto and Sanford Wright Chamber Music competitions in multiple years, as well.
Tera has been a member of the Everett Youth Symphony Orchestras for five years, where she has served as concertmaster of the youth orchestra and assistant concertmaster of the intermezzo orchestra.
A seventh-grader at Langley Middle School, Tera studies violin with Jan Coleman of the Coleman Violin Studio in Bothell.
