Students in South Whidbey High School’s jazz band program earned awards and high scores over the weekend at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho.
The students placed first in the large ensemble division against bands from across the United States and Canada.
“We were recognized for our challenging programing and mature style and control, as well as outstanding solo work from Jack Hood and Patrick Shive,” said band director Chris Harshman in an email.
Jack Hood received honorable mention in the solo piano category. Mara Bush in the solo saxophone category and Mei Mei Hensler in the solo violin category earned high scores with their performances.
The small combo group, including musicians Connor Workman, Joe Ballestrasse, Jason Li and Garrett Poteat, was recognized for outstanding preparation and response during their clinic.
Students raised money for months before the four-day festival with performances and events such as the Sweetheart Big Band Dance and holiday poinsettia sale.
