Island County commissioners approved a contract with the state Department of Fish and Wildlife Monday to assist in completing projects under a recently approved $40,000 culvert prioritization grant.

The two governmental bodies will work together to complete tasks required by the grant and to train local staff to perform culvert assessments county-wide. The assessments performed will help prioritize culverts for replacement to assist in salmon recovery efforts.

The assessments will be completed between Aug. 1 and June 30, according to the contract.
