Two weeks was too long a stretch for South Whidbey wrestling to go without a match.

A last-minute tournament was added to the Falcons’ schedule at Washington High School in Tacoma on Saturday. More than 350 wrestlers hit the gym’s seven mats for an all-day, all-comers tournament. And the Falcons showed their quality as seven wrestlers battled in championship matches against competition across the classifications.

“We didn’t want to go two weeks without a tournament,” said Falcon head coach Jim Thompson. “We looked pretty good.”

Only one South Whidbey wrestler, however, won his weight class. Beck Davis, a senior in the 185-pound division, claimed a title with a forfeit in the championship match.

Six other Falcons took second place. Andy Madsen narrowly fell in the 145 with a 2-0 loss. Seniors Tyler Russell in the 138 and Kyrell Broyles in the 152 both placed second. Pierce Jackson lost in the 285-pound championship match, and Trevor Miller fell in the 220 final bout. Hunter Newman finished in second place in the 126.

Falcon senior James Itaya placed third in the 160. Thompson said senior Donnie Sutton lost his chance because of a bleeding nose that could not be stopped, which used all of his allotted injury time. Another wrestler, senior Calvin Shimada, was pulled after falling ill early in the all-day meet.

Thompson also noted the first-place performance of freshman Jack Nielson in the 138 junior varsity tournament.

South Whidbey will learn the seedings of its wrestlers after a meeting Wednesday, Feb. 5, for the District 1 tournament that runs this weekend. Ahead of the postseason, two points of focus for the Falcons this week will be aggressiveness and escaping, their coach said.

“We still need to improve everywhere,” he said.
