At a recent breakfast meeting, the Rotary Club of South Whidbey presented scholarship awards to 22 outstanding South Whidbey students.
This year, $17,000 was awarded to not only those students of high academic achievement but also to those students pursuing an avenue of vocational achievement. Awards were based on each student’s involvement in the community, school activities outside the classroom, after-school jobs and a commitment to educational excellence, considering both their GPA and the AP courses that they have taken, where applicable.
The college-aged Academic Scholars who received scholarships for their continuing education are: Elizabeth Grant, attending Seattle University and studying theater and environmental studies; Natalie Groce, attending Western Washington University and studying elementary education; Philip Hofius, attending Whitman college and studying English literature and French language and culture; Krista Ann Holmberg, attending Washington State University and studying early education; Sean Hough, attending Willamette University and studying education training; Erica Johnson, attending Pacific Lutheran University and studying math with a minor in Latin and environmental studies; and Laurel Johnson, attending the University of Washington and majoring in international studies.
South Whidbey High School scholarship recipients are: Cassie Bosman, who plans to study nursing and Spanish at WSU; Courtney Bosman, who plans to study elementary education at WSU; Maya Hough, who plans to study biochemical engineering at Santa Clara University; Emily Lindus, who plans to study business and communications at PLU; Zora Lungren, who has been accepted at the Tisch School of the Arts at NY University; Amanda Reeves, who plans to study political science/global urban development at Seattle Pacific University; Michael Scullin, who plans to study history and film at Western Washington University; Benjamin Snow, who plans to study pre-law/government at Georgetown University; Scott Stallman, who plans to study civil engineering and business at Gonzaga University; and Lauren Stelling, who plans to study communications and art at Western Washington University.
The Bernie Robertson Memorial Scholarship (Vocational) Awards went to: Melissa Coble, who will attend Bellevue Community College studying to be an ultrasound technician; Danny Hertel, who will be studying film production; Halla Miller, a past Bayview graduate, who will be majoring in dance at the Cornish College of the Arts; Samantha O’Brochta, a Whidbey Academy graduate, who will be studying journalism and theater at Western Washington University; and Channa Potter, who will be studying business and fashion design at Edmonds Community College.
The Rotary Club wishes to thank the South Whidbey community for its continued support of Rotary and its local projects, including the club’s various fundraisers that allow Rotarians to award scholarships to qualified students each year.
