All but one of South Whidbey Little League’s All-Star teams in both baseball and softball were eliminated this week.
Only the combined 9/10-year-old Central and South Whidbey Little League softball team remained, and it played in an elimination game Tuesday night.
Rally falls short for 11/12 baseball
A seventh-inning rally by the 11/12-year-old South Whidbey Little League baseball All-Stars fell shy Monday against Sedro-Woolley.
Playing at South Whidbey Community Park, South Whidbey Little League’s home field, Sedro-Woolley won 7-6. South Whidbey had its tying run at third base.
Nick Young got things off to a strong start with a home run in the first inning.
Sedro-Woolley took a strong 7-1 lead in the middle of the game, and appeared to be poised to advance in the tournament.
South Whidbey mounted a comeback in the final inning, cutting the lead to one run, but a groundout for a close call at first base ended the game, and South Whidbey’s season.
9/10 baseball team booted by Sedro
A pair of double-digit losses ended South Whidbey’s 9/10-year-old Little League All-Star season after an 18-3 loss to Sedro-Woolley on Monday.
The South Whidbey team had its first loss Sunday after a first-round bye. But South Whidbey ran into the offensive juggernaut of Burlington-Edison, which had won its first game 14-7 over Anacortes. Burlington-Edison followed up with a 14-2 drubbing of South Whidbey, which bumped the island team to the elimination bracket.
Facing Sedro-Woolley in a loser-out game Monday at their home turf, Kiwanis Fields in Sedro-Woolley, the home team prevailed, 18-3.
Softball cruises in first round
The 9/10-year-old softball team from Central/South Whidbey walloped both opponents in the opening round this weekend.
At the Community Park fields on South Whidbey, the combined team of players from Central and South Whidbey’s Little Leagues dominated with a pair of 10-run wins. In the opening game, Central/South Whidbey won 22-5 over North Whidbey, and advanced to beat Sedro-Woolley 12-2.
The sluggers took on South Skagit/Sedro-Woolley on Tuesday, after The Record went to press. If Central/South Whidbey won, they advanced to the state All-Stars tournament. If they lost, they played a loser-out, winner-to-state game.
Anacortes drops fastpitch squad
The 11/12-year old softball team composed of players from Central and South Whidbey’s Little Leagues fought off playoff elimination this weekend.
The softball All-Stars lost their first-round game to Skagit 8-2 on Sunday, then followed up with an 11-9 victory over North Whidbey in the nightcap.
Central/South Whidbey fell 18-8 to Anacortes on Monday night and was eliminated from the tournament.
