A Freeland man involved in a motorcycle versus vehicle accident was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Monday.

The crash happened about 2 p.m. Aug. 12 at the intersection of Highway 525 and Freeland Avenue.

According to a Washington State Patrol trooper, Robert Roane of Freeland was northbound on the highway and approaching the intersection on his Suzuki GSXR 750 motorcycle when Roxanne Taylor, a Langley resident, turned her Mercury sedan in front of him.

The collision sent Roane crashing into the car’s driver side and windshield. Taylor was unharmed and declined medical attention, said Mike Cotton, deputy fire chief for South Whidbey Fire/EMS.

Cotton was one of the first people on the scene as he was heading to the fire protection district’s main station about a half-mile away.

When he arrived, he saw the car perpendicular in the left turn lane, the motorcycle on its side and a few people standing around the downed bike.

Roane was complaining of pain in his left leg and stomach but also inquiring about his motorcycle. Cotton took his attentiveness as a good sign.

“I liked the fact that he was alert and conscious,” Cotton said.

The man was transported by Whidbey General Hospital emergency medical technicians to a nearby field where he was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center.

Washington State Patrol spokesman Trooper Mark Francis said the injuries did not appear to be life threatening based upon the report filed by Trooper Dave Martin, who investigated the scene.

Martin said he issued a citation to Taylor for failing to yield.

Roane was listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Harborview Medical Center on Tuesday.
