Talk is ‘I’m Just Not That Spiritual!’
Speaker and songwriter Doug Benecke will bring the message to Unity of Whidbey this Sunday, Nov. 1. His talk is entitled “I’m Just Not That Spiritual!”
Benecke will explore the question of how do we feel connected to the spirit in times when we just don’t feel inspired. If the spiritual path requires a spark of enthusiasm, what path are we walking on those wintry workdays when we feel soggy and bogged down by worldly details? Have spiritual teachers also traveled this road of blues and blahs, and have they left trail markers for us to follow?
The service will include inspiring music by Benecke and violinist
Talia Toni Marcus.
Unity meets at 10 a.m. Sunday at Bayview Community Hall. All are welcome.
UUCWI talk covers ‘The Joy of Pilgrimage’
Bill Graves recently walked 250 miles of the Camino de Santiago de Campostela in Northern Spain — one of the old pilgrimage routes. The sermon at the Sunday service for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island grows out of his experience and will address pilgrimage as a spiritual practice and as a metaphor for life.
The talk will be punctuated with excerpts from pilgrimage poems memorized during the walk, and by wisdom proverbs of the Camino learned along the way.
Graves is a member of UUCWI and a candidate for the Unitarian Universalist ministry at Seattle University.
The service is at 10 a.m. at the church, 20103 Highway 525, just north of Freeland. Values-based children’s religious exploration classes and childcare will be provided.

Sermon examines the state of mind
Jesus pointed out that people prefer to give their children the best of everything. Surely God, the Creator, wants the best for her children as well.
Sometimes, “the best” seems far removed. According to Science and Health, “Heaven is not a locality, but a divine state of mind in which all the manifestations of mind are harmonious and immortal.”
That state of mind is possible in the here and now, for as Jesus also pointed out, “The kingdom of heaven is within you.”
On Sunday, Nov. 1, the Christian Science Church service examines the source of “punishment” mortals experience and how that can be removed from your experience today.
The service is 10:30 a.m. at the Christian Science Church, 15910 Highway 525. Everyone is welcome.
Topic is ‘The Necessity of Brotherly Love’
What is the identifying characteristic of those who describe themselves as “Christian”?
“The Necessity of Brotherly Love” is the title of Pastor Ron Wedeking’s sermon Sunday morning at South Whidbey Community Church. It is based on 1st John 3:10-15. It is also communion Sunday.
The adult learning forum will meet at its regular time of 9 a.m., with Stan Walker leading a study in the Book of Acts, and Art Angst will continue with the Gospel of Luke. Morning worship will remain at its regular time of 10 to 11 a.m.
SWCC gathers for worship each Sunday at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road, Langley.
