To the editor:

I want to thank the South Whidbey Record for their timely reporting on the voter eligibility issues relevant to the Freeland Water and Sewer District. As a result of this article and the efforts of many local citizens, including Marilynn Abrahamson, Lou Malzone, John Chaffins and Pam Neschke, to name a few, I will receive a ballot that will permit me to vote for new commissioners.

For the past 30 years, the county auditor’s office has solicited new maps and boundaries for the Freeland Water and Sewer District. Despite requests, no new data has been supplied and the county auditor’s office has had to rely on 30-year-old records. Sheilah Crider, our current auditor, now has the updated records in her possession.

The current Freeland Water and Sewer District has been uncommonly lax in reporting to the auditor’s office, in spite of frequent reminders. As a result, hundreds of us have been unable to vote on district issues. While there is no evidence of any deliberate wrongdoing, many of us are eager to vote for new commissioners who will practice due diligence when it comes to voters’ rights.

As a result, I will be voting for Marilynn Abrahamson and Lou Malzone for the positions they seek.
