This presenter knows the chemical reaction to produce chuckles and he has the tools to leave children and adults giggling until their sides hurt. His presentation brings the Family Series back to Whidbey Island Center for the Arts with a boom.

With a name as explosive as the fun he offers, Doktor Kaboom will blast into Langley with a double dose of science and fun.

This one-man science variety show will have audience members of any age holding their sides from laughing too hard at one show set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at Whidbey Island Center for the Arts in Langley.

Comedy and science

Doktor Kaboom, also known as David Epley, creatively blends comedy with science experiments and demonstrations, said Stacie Burgua, executive director for WICA.

“When I saw him perform last week I was in the front row, said Deana Duncan, production/programming director for WICA. “As he launched a ‘rocket’ to the back wall of the theater we were all sprinkled with ‘rocket fuel’ (vinegar) but were laughing so hard we didn’t care.”

“He’s so funny, so smart, you walk out thankful that there are still scientists among us and wanting your kids to go do their homework,” Burgua said.

Doktor Kaboom is the creation of actor and comedian David Epley. Epley discovered two passions in his life: science, which took him to studies at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, and performing, which became his career.

“For 20 years, David has made his living writing, performing and directing original interactive comedy across the U.S. and Canada. He now brings his passions together with an explosive style that refuses to allow his audiences time to catch a breath,” a press release said.

Laughs and fun are just the frosting on top of a show packed with learning.

“I was lucky enough to meet Doktor Kaboom last week in Boise at the Northwest Booking Conference and see him perform. I knew kids and families would love his funny, educational, physical comedy but what surprised me was his deep commitment to science and math curriculum in today’s public schools. Teachers and parents are going to love his constant reminder to his audiences to create science and math experiences every day,” Duncan said.

A family theater

WICA is excited to reintroduce its Family Series, Burgua said, especially with such an explosive first program. The Family Series was launched in 1999 in an effort to bring off-island entertainment and cultural events to the community at affordable ticket prices, allowing the entire family to experience the performing arts, Burgua said.

Back after 2 years

“Due to budget constraints, the Family Series was not available for the past two seasons, so it is especially gratifying to return the series with a dynamic lineup of talent,” Burgua said.

The series will include Taylor 2 Dance in March and Seattle Shakespeare Company in May, she added.
