The constancy of sacred space at Unity
Songwriter and speaker Doug Benecke will speak on the gentle persistence of the sacred presence at the Unity of Whidbey service on Sunday.
It is easy to think that love and connection are in short supply. We can find ourselves believing that miracles happened in some remote time, but can never occur today. But love, wonder and sacred reality are as close as each breath, as intimate as our own heartbeats, and as available as a moment of shared laughter.
The service will include musical blessings by Talia Toni Marcus, violinist and violist.
The Unity of Whidbey service is 10 a.m. Sunday at Bayview Community Hall. Visitors are always welcome.
SWCC celebrates Communion Sunday
Sunday morning is Communion Sunday at South Whidbey Community Church. Will we experience joy or shame at Jesus’ return? Pastor Ron Wedeking will continue his series in the 1st Letter of John with the sermon title: “Having Confidence in Christ’s Coming,” based on 1John 2:28,29.
Adult forum classes begin at 9 a.m. with Stan Walker continuing in the Book of Acts, and Art Angst is picking up in Luke, Chapter 13 after moving from Wednesday nights to Sunday mornings. Morning worship will follow at its regular time of 10 a.m.

UUCWI explores the Semantics of Faith
The Semantics of Faith: What do we mean by “purpose” and “meaning”?
Does my life have a purpose? What does my existence mean? Why am I here? Is this it, or is there more?
The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island is considering some of these big theological questions this church year. But to explore these imponderables, we first need to clarify our meanings. Language is an imprecise and unpredictable medium for this endeavor, and yet it’s our basic means of communication.
Ken Merrell will explore the languages of faith, philosophy and science.

Langley UMC offers 10-week love course
“The Nature and Practice of Love: Exploring the Place of Love in the World Religions,” a 10-week course at Langley United Methodist Church presented by Dr. Duncan Ferguson, will be held in the Fireside Room from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays through Dec. 2.
Ferguson received his doctorate’s degree from the University of Edinburgh, has taught in the field of religious studies and world religions in several colleges and universities and is author/editor of four books.

Sunday’s lesson examines ‘Man’
To examine how our Father-Mother blesses us all, the Sept. 6 lesson-sermon at the Christian Science Society examines the concept of “Man,” as defined by Mary Baker Eddy: “Man is the family name for all ideas — the sons and daughters of God.”
We are all able to claim this blessed inheritance today and live freely from want, sickness and fear. “All of you are children of the most High.” (Psalms 82:6)

Time change coming for St. Augustine’s
St. Augustine’s in-the-Woods Episcopal Church is changing its Sunday 10 a.m. Holy Eucharist service to 10:30 a.m., effective Sunday, Sept. 13.

Father Jude Eli to conduct classes
In celebration of “The Year of the Priest,” the Knights of Columbus at St. Hubert Catholic Church in Langley are sponsoring a series of classes on the essential theological perspective of Saint Paul.
Father Jude Eli, a member of the Dominican order, will conduct the adult education program over four days beginning Monday, Sept. 28 and ending Thursday, Oct. 1. Classes will be conducted daily in St. Hubert’s church following the 8:15 a.m. mass. Morning classes are from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and evening classes are from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
There is no charge for the classes, and the public is invited.
Father Eli studied at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley in California and has done sabbatical work in the areas of Biblical archaeology and Judaica in Jerusalem as well as adult education and systematic theology at the American College in Leuven, Belgium.
Eli can be seen on Sky Angel Satellite on the Catholic program “To Tell the World.” His classes on Saint Paul will provide theological perspective in the areas of Revelation, Christology, Resurrection and Eschatology.
