The South Whidbey tennis team beat Ferndale 4-3 late last week, and now sports a 7-2 record for the season.
“We started slow and gradually took over the momentum,” said Falcon coach Tom Kramer. “Reilly [O’Sullivan] played one of her best matches, playing aggressive but consistent. She utilized the entire court well and ended up dictating the tempo of the game.”
In singles, O’Sullivan won 6-2, 6-2; Lena Nichols lost 3-6, 4-6; Alexa Brewster lost in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 2-6; and Jessica Carey lost 6-7, 4-6.
“Lena, Alexa and Jessica played hard, long matches, but neither could put the point away when the opportunity presented itself,” Kramer said.
The Falcon doubles partners swept the field. Shannon Craig and Julia Iversen won 6-2, 6-0; Katie Holt and Hayley Newman also won for the Falcons, 6-2, 6-2; and Teagen Nielsen and Bayley Heggenes won 6-4, 6-2.
“Teagen and Bayley started slow, then dominated late,” Kramer said. “Katie and Hayley continue to improve tactically, while Shannon and Julia overpowered their opponents once again.
I enjoy that type of consistency.”
Today, the girls travel to Anacortes, then to Coupeville on Friday, April 23.
