Something changed for South Whidbey girls soccer when it reached the playoffs Wednesday.

The Falcons rolled to a 4-0 off-island win over the Blaine Borderites. It was the most goals scored in a single game by South Whidbey this season and the first postseason win in several years.

“This is a big milestone in the girls soccer program,” said Falcon senior Maia Sparkman.

South Whidbey cruised with an early lead and rode the hot feet of Sparkman, who recorded her second hat trick of the year with three goals in the 1A District 1 playoff match.

Two of Sparkman’s goals came on assists by sophomore Kendra Warwick. Falcon junior Isla Dubendorf scored South Whidbey’s fourth goal.

Making timely tackles and trapping the Borderites was South Whidbey’s defense. Senior Katie Sibley, sophomore Annie Lux, sophomore Anni Field and goalie Cassie Neil combined for the shutout victory, only the fourth of the season for South Whidbey.

South Whidbey traveled north to face Meridian, the top-seeded team in District 1, on Friday afternoon, after The Record went to press. The Falcons can secure a spot in the tri-district tournament with a victory over the Meridian Trojans, or with two wins should South Whidbey lose Friday.
