See all this year’s Island Dance class performances including the advanced lyrical class’s award-winning “Seven Devils,” submitted to WICA. It took fourth place, age 17 Senior Award, in the competitive division for the most experienced dancers at Northwest Regionals in Tacoma.
The Island Dance recital at South Whidbey High School will be presented at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 22.
General admission seats are on sale at the Island Dance office at the Langley Middle School campus. Advance tickets cost $12 for adults, $10 for youths, or $15 for all at the door. Call 360-341-1282.
At Northwest Regionals in May, Island Dance independent dancer Melyssa Smith received a Double Platinum trophy, third place, age 15 senior contemporary in the most experienced competitive division for her solo “Take It All.” Independent dancer Taylor Philippsborn received a Platinum trophy, first place ages 13-14 teen contemporary performance division for beginning dancers and second place overall for all dance styles for her solo, “It’s Gonna Be A Long Walk.”
The Island Dance Competition Team received five platinum trophies and three Gold trophies, all in the performance division for beginning dancers. Every Island team dancer, for the first time, came home with an overall placement award. Kelsey Lampe received third place in teen solo. Kendall Marshall received fifth place in junior solo. Taylor Pitts received second place in mini solo. “Wild Horses” received second place in junior duet/trio. “Hey, Nah Neh Nah” received eighth place in junior duet/trio. “’Somewhere Over the Rainbow” received second place in mini duet/trio. “In This Shirt” received first place in teen duet/trio. “Jump Around” received seventh place in junior duet/trio.
In “Showstopper,” WIDT submitted another piece in the dance teachers division; “Shake and Shop” choreographed by Karli Hunter. The crowd-pleaser received a Platinum award and first overall.
The Codance Northwest Regional Convention/Competition, which included a full weekend of classes with world-class choreographers/judges such as Tyce Diorio from “So You Think You Can Dance,” was held April 5-7 in Seattle. Independent dancer Melyssa Smith was awarded the highest Codance award, Platinum, and received third place over all dance styles for her self-choreographed solo in the Teen Division, and indie Taylor Philippsborn’s solo in the same division received a Gold award.
The Comp Team dancers at Codance were honored by instructors by being called upon during the actual classes to perform: Taylor Pitts and Faith Mathew in Barry Youngblood’s Mini Hip Hop class, Kendall Marshall in Chris Jones’ Junior Jazz class, Ariana Abrahams in Tyce Diorio’s Contemporary Teen class, and Mya Ford in Chris Jones Junior Jazz class.
