South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District officials delivered a presentation in the capital yesterday hoping to bag half a million dollars for the district’s proposed campground plan in Community Park.
The district is aiming to score $516,621 in state grant monies from the Recreation and Conservation Office, and have been preparing for the presentation for months. This is the second of two phases in the grant application process, and Parks Director Doug Coutts says the state’s review committee will select the recipient of the grant money in Oct.
The proposed campground site is located behind the high school. Park commissioners have opted for scattered campsites as opposed to one group of clustered sites.
As of now, the only available camping on South Whidbey is at the fairgrounds. The campsites at South Whidbey State Park are closed for overnight use due to safety issues involving tree rot.
