Port to hold harbor design workshop
The Port of South Whidbey will hold a workshop today to examine the design for the South Whidbey marina.
“The session is to evaluate with our engineer the input we got at our last public meeting,” said port manager Ed Field. “We’ll be taking a look at berthing spaces, fairway widths and breakwater placement.”
The meeting is at 9 a.m. today at the port’s office in Freeland.
Open Studio Tour seeks sponsors
The Whidbey Island Open Studio Tour is seeking sponsors for this year’s artist studio tour.
Sponsorships provide necessary funding to advertise the tour, scholarships for high school seniors intending to pursue college studies in art and visual arts grants for established Whidbey Island artists.
The tour also hopes to raise enough money this year to offer a program to teach professional skills to local artists.
The 2008 Open Studio Tour is Sept. 27 through Sept. 28, and is produced by the non-profit Island Arts Council. All sponsorships are tax deductible.

Readings continue at Hedgebrook
The Women Authoring Change Literary Landscapes series of readings continues with a reading at Hedgebrook later this month.
The theme for the reading is “families.” Alumnae authors Kathryn Hunt, Hilary Meyerson, Donna Miscolta and Mitsu
Sundvall will read from works that focus on family with its variety of personal perspectives, real and imagined.
The reading will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 28 on the Hedgebrook campus at 2197 Millman Road in Langley.

Food Bucks back at the market
Shoppers at the Bayview Farmers Market will be able to provide $5 market vouchers to South Whidbey families in need via Good Cheer’s Food Bucks program.
The vouchers will be given to Good Cheer Food Bank clients, while supplies last, for use in July at the Saturday Bayview market to purchase fresh, organic produce and food items. Donations can be made at the Good Cheer table at the market, or at participating vendors displaying donation signs.
The program was started last year by Carolyn Tamler. She said it was a “win-win-win situation” with donors helping people in need, food bank clients receiving additional fresh produce and market farmers and vendors benefiting from additional business.

Loganberry invites artists to action
Whidbey Island artists are invited to gain exposure this summer at the Greenbank Farm Loganberry Festival on Saturday and Sunday, July 26 and 27.
The festival is looking for artists as vendors or demonstrators.
The festival is an annual event with music, wine tasting, food, an arts and crafts sale, children’s activities, hay rides and pie-eating contests.
This year, Greenbank Farm is also hosting an Artists in Action program so artists can demonstrate how they work and also create contacts.

Greenbank art to grace book cover
Whidbey Telecom has announced the winner of its 2008-2009 Directory Cover Art Competition.
The cover will feature “Whidbey Sky,” a digital photograph by Lois Mason of Greenbank.
The competition’s 2008 judging panel was headed by Whidbey Telecom president Marion F. Henny and vice president Julia H. DeMartini. In addition, two independent members of the art community, Anne Belov and Rob Schouten, helped adjudicate the entries.
“It is such an inspiration and privilege to share this process with local artists and our community,” DeMartini said. “We are blessed to live in an area that is abundant in creativity and talent.”
DeMartini said the panel extends their appreciation to all the artists who submitted their work for consideration in the competition.
Mason will receive $500 and her artwork will be featured on the cover of approximately 20,000 telephone directories.
Directories are mailed to Whidbey Telecom subscribers on South Whidbey, Hat Island and Point Roberts in early November.
