The Coast Guard has called off the search to find a body that was reported in the waters off South Whidbey.

“The actual search has been suspended,” Coast Guard Petty Officer David Marin said Thursday afternoon.

The Coast Guard received a report at 9:43 a.m. Thursday that said two people had spotted a body in the water near Mukilteo. The body was described as wearing black shoes, a tan coat and blue pants.

Ferry service on the Clinton-Mukitleo route was stopped just before the 9:30 a.m. sailing as WSF crews manned two boats to investigate an empty skiff in the ferry lane between South Whidbey and Mukilteo.

Following the report of a body, personnel from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, Tulalip Tribal Police and the Coast Guard joined in the search.

An HH-65C Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Port Angeles joined the effort, and the Coast Guard Cutter Terrapin from Bellingham was also called in to assist in the effort.

No body has been found, Marin said, and the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office is now handling the investigation.

The 9:30 a.m. ferry from Clinton sailed at 9:50 a.m. and was diverted to Edmonds, where passengers and most of the vehicles disembarked. Additional sailings were placed on hold while the search effort continued.

Service on the Clinton-Mukilteo route was restarted at 1 p.m.
