It was a busy weekend for South Whidbey Fire/EMS, which Deputy Chief Mike Cotton called, a “years worth” of car accidents.
The hectic few days started with the three-car collision that involved Langley Police Officer Lucas Adkins on Aug. 14. Adkins was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, while the other two drivers were uninjured. Emergency responders were just getting cleared from that scene when at around 8:30 p.m. they were called to a two-car crash on Maxwelton Road in front of the South Whidbey Parks and Recreation Office. A man driving a Toyota pickup truck crossed the center line and struck a Ford Escort with two female occupants. The woman driving the Ford attempted to evade the oncoming danger but could not. The man was hurt “pretty bad” according to Cotton. The women were able to step out of their vehicle and walk into the ambulance unassisted. The Ford had significant damage, while the Toyota was “demolished,” according to Cotton.
Firefighters responded to a motorcycle versus deer accident on Saturday afternoon which occurred on Highway 525 just north of Island Recycling. A man and a woman were on the southbound shoulder when witnesses saw the motorcycle hit a deer.
Both occupants of the motorcycle were taken to the hospital. Cotton could not say what the extent of their injuries were.
A two-car collision occurred later that night on Highway 525 near Woodard Avenue. A woman driving an SUV missed a stop sign on Woodard Avenue. A different woman northbound in an SUV collided with the other SUV’s driver’s door as it missed the stop. Cotton said the driver was “talking and banged up,” but that she looked “stable” and answering questions. The other woman needed help getting out of her car, according to Cotton, and was injured worse than the other.
On Sunday at around 2 p.m., there was a motorcycle crash on Surface Road near Les Schwab. A pickup truck stopped to assist the driver, who had bumps and bruises according to Cotton. The cause of the crash was unknown.
