The South Whidbey boys baseball team lost its series against Cedarcrest last week, three straight.

The Red Wolves are unbeaten at 9-0 while the Falcons are 3-4 in the league and 3-5 overall.

Due to unplayable field conditions at Cedarcrest, the entire three-game series was played at Falcon Field, including a double header on Friday.

“Playing at home certainly didn’t give the Falcons an advantage, however, as the bats were still silent playing the league leaders from Duvall,” said Falcon coach Dave Guetlin.

The double-header games had Cedarcrest winning 9-1 and 5-0.

In the first contest, the Red Wolves did all their damage in the first inning as they picked up three unearned runs with only one hit, combined with two costly Falcon errors. The Red Wolves had another big inning in the third, picking up four more runs.

“That was all they needed as they cruised for the win,” Guetlin noted.

Falcon Mick Poynter led off the third inning with a double down the right field line. He was then moved over to third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Robert Kirby for the team’s lone score.

In the second game Friday, the Falcons continued to struggle against the Red Wolf pitching staff. Three Cedarcrest pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter at the Falcons to win 5-0.

It was a tight game until the fifth inning, when the Red Wolves picked up four unearned runs.

“Pitcher Luke Hodson did a fine job on the mound holding the Red Wolves in check until a couple of costly miscues proved the Falcons undoing,” Guetlin said.

“Hunter Rawls came to the mound in relief and threw two shut-out innings, as did

TJ Fallon. Rawls gave up only one hit in his two innings of work.”

In the last four innings, the Falcons left eight runners on base but couldn’t manage to get the key hit when needed.

At 4 p.m. Wednesday, the team hosts Lakewood at Falcon Field.
