Four people transported to Whidbey General Hospital Monday following a two-car crash in Freeland all suffered minor injuries, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The accident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 525 and Bush Point Road. A 2002 Toyota Prius with two occupants, identified by state police as Theresa Buechner, 79, and Cherie Glover, 54, was southbound on the state route and passing through the intersection when their vehicle collided with a 2004 Toyota Avalon, which also had two occupants, Merlyn Foote, 81, and Robert Foote, 89.

All four people are from Freeland.

The Avalon was northbound on the highway and making a left turn onto Bush Point Road when the accident occurred, Washington State Patrol Trooper Larry Provoncha said. All four people were transported to Whidbey General Hospital but he could not confirm the extent of their injuries at the time.

“It doesn’t sound like it’s life-threatening at this point,” said Provoncha, from the scene of the accident.

Trooper Mark Francis, a spokesman for the state patrol, confirmed Wednesday that all of the occupants went to the hospital as a precautionary measure. The worst injury was whiplash, Francis said.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged in the accident, one so much so that firefighters had to use special tools to extricate a passenger.

Provoncha determined failure to yield was the cause of the collision, and the driver of the Toyota Avalon, Merlyn Foote, was issued a citation. The officer said speed did not appear to be a factor in the accident.

The crash closed one lane of traffic, with some motorists being detoured to Honeymoon Bay Road, for about one hour.
