A Freeland woman was rescued early Friday morning after she became disoriented and lost in the woods near her home, emergency officials said.

Island County Fire District 3 Assistant Chief Paul Busch said the woman, described as elderly and living alone, turned the wrong way after leaving her vehicle about 2 a.m. and ended up lost in brush and trees about 100 yards from her house near Dow and Wahl roads.

“She didn’t leave any lights on,” Busch said. “Instead of turning left toward the house, she went straight ahead.”

He said the woman, who was alone, called 911 on her cellphone after becoming lost, and the communications center was able to trace her approximate location.

Two Island County Sheriff’s deputies, two Whidbey General Hospital emergency medical services personnel and two fire district personnel joined in the search, and the woman was located in about 20 minutes, Busch said.

He said the woman’s clothes were wet from the brush and intermittent rain, but she appeared unhurt. She was transported to Whidbey General Hospital for an examination.
